O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Models appeared in commercials for some time prior to moving to Los Angeles. Her career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
