O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement in her performances. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performance. The judge Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win of her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
